Financial Health

Many people do not realize that their financial health directly affects their physical and mental health and well being. Worrying about financial matters can prevent them from getting enough sleep and can significantly increase the amount of stress in their lives. Couple that with poor levels of fitness and a lack of proper nutrition and you have a recipe for a disaster waiting to happen.

How would you rate your financial health? Can you easily pay all of your monthly bills and expenses with money left over or do you just get by from paycheck to paycheck hoping not to encounter any unexpected surprises? Do you worry about running out of money before you run out of month? Do you have money put aside for emergencies like unexpected auto repairs?

What if you lost your job tomorrow? Do you have enough money put aside to pay your living expenses (gas, food, rent, utilities, etc … ) for NINE months? That’s what most financial experts have recommended for years. Based on real life experiences from the recent recession you should probably be thinking TWELVE months. Do you know anyone personally who has that kind of a safety net? How about A safety net?

Have you considered what would happen if you or a member of your family incurred unexpected major medical expenses? A study of mortgage foreclosures in four states published in August of 2008 titled, “Get Sick, Get Out: The Medical Causes Of Home Mortgage Foreclosures” by Christopher Tarver Robertson, Richard Egelhof, & Michael Hoke, found that “ … medical crises contribute to half of all home foreclosure filings. If these patterns hold nationwide, medical causes may put as many as 1.5 million Americans in jeopardy of losing their homes each year."

So how would you rate your financial health? If it’s less than desirable what are you doing about it? What can you do about it?

Enjoying a Better Quality of Life

Would you like to get paid for something that you may already be doing, something everyone should be doing?

These days it is extremely difficult to ignore the tremendous amount of attention being focused on health and wellness. Everyone either wants to improve their level of health and fitness or at least knows that they need to. This is important, not only because everyone wants to look and feel better but because of numerous medical studies, doctors now know that many of the diseases and ailments that plague us as we get older are largely preventable.

Americans are living longer due in part to improvements in medical science but longer life spans aren’t necessarily synonymous with a better quality of life and isn’t that really what everyone wants?

The good news is that the quality of life that you enjoy as you get older is largely within your control. In addition to determining your level of health and fitness, the decisions that you make and the actions that you take will also determine the lifestyle that you can afford later in life. The question that you have to ask yourself is, if nothing changes, if you keep doing what you’ve done so far, will you have a lifestyle that allows you to do the things that you really want to do or will you have to settle for a lesser lifestyle in which you only do the things that you can afford to do?

So how do you achieve that lifestyle that you desire? It is as simple as taking better care of yourself by exercising and enjoying better nutrition (something you should be doing) and sharing your success with the people you know (something you already do).

Remember: your quality of life and your lifestyle are within your control. If you don't like where you are heading, change your direction!

Changing the Odds in Your Favor

People are funny when it comes to surveys, studies and statistics. Regardless of the numbers people seem to exhibit the belief that they are atypical and therefore the studies do not apply to them but rather to “other people”. Consider the following example:

According to the Department of Social Security the average American will retire with less than $10,000 in the bank. By age 65, only 1 out of 100 people will be wealthy, only 4 out of 100 people will be financially independent, 32 out of 100 people will be dead and 63 out of 100 people will be dependent on Social Security.

Think about that. By age sixty-five, 95% of us will be either dead or dead broke. That means that if you do not have a plan or a vehicle that will make you either wealthy or at least financially independent then the odds of you being in that 95% are … 95%.

So let us assume for the moment that you are not on track to land in that upper 5%. Do you want to be? Do you REALLY want to be? If it were within your power to do so, would you take the steps necessary to increase your chances of landing in that upper tier? How much energy, time and money would you be willing to invest in your personal success?

The good news is that there is a business that will allow you to achieve this level of success without investing a lot of money and which requires only a fraction of the time that you give to your “9 to 5”. It doesn’t require any special talent or experience. You can start immediately and work it around your schedule.

Here’s more good news. While you will be in business for yourself you will not be in business by yourself. If you are coachable and willing to take direction there are people who have a vested interest in your success who will help you at every step of your journey. You’ll find the same types of support resources used by Fortune 500 companies around the world to provide training and growth opportunities for their employees as well as personal recognition programs few companies can match.

Do you remember what the odds are that you’ll end up dead or dead broke by age 65? Are you going to change those odds in your favor? It is up to you.

A Better Life

What would it take for you to have a better life? The answer(s) to that question would probably depend on what aspect(s) of your life that you were considering when someone asked you the question. Are you in good health? Do you have enough money to pay all of your bills on time? Can you cover unexpected expenses without too much difficulty? Is your debt under control? Will you be able to retire comfortably at a reasonable age? Are you able to spend time with your family and friends? Are you able to find time for relaxation and recreation? What are the things in life that are most important to you and do you have the time and money to do those things?

These are really pretty simple questions most of which can be answered with a “yes” or a “no”. If you answered “yes” to most of the questions, then congratulations but, in my opinion, you are probably in the minority. For each question to which you answered “no”, first ask yourself “why?” and then ask yourself “what am I doing about it?”

There are certainly things in life that are outside of your control but for the most part, you are where you are in life because of the choices that you have made and the choices that you continue to make. If Plan A isn’t working for you, then what’s Plan B?

The life you imagine is within your grasp. Are you willing to reach for it?
